Part 2 Lectionary for Pre-Easter through Pentecost

This is an resource for the American Tutors at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Nyamira, Kenya and the students. The following tables
list the Sunday readings for the Church Year as they are found in the hymnals in use among the congregations in Western Kenya. The Kiswahili hymnal is called Mwimbiene Bwana and is abbreviated MB in the tables. The Ekegusii hymnal is called Moterere Omonene and is abbreviated MO in the tables. In most respects MO is a translation of MB from Kiswahili into Ekegusii.

There are some significant differences between the two books. Many of these differences are accidental. The tables below attempt to show the differences and offer suggestions. The tables will also note differences from the Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s hymnal The Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary, abbreviated ELH.

The information in the tables is derived from:

The Ekegusii Terms for Vipers and Matthew 3:7 ching'iti/ἐχιδνῶν/vipers

Vipera palaestina hatchling Taken In Israel, By Guy Haimovitch
During class a student asked a question on the Ekegusii translation of a term in Matthew 3:7.  In Ebiblia Enchenu [Kenyan Bible Society] the term ching'iti [singular: eng'iti] is used for vipers, ἐχιδνῶν.

The passage follows in Ekegusii, New Testament Greek, and English with the terms in bold print:
Agachia korora abanto abange ase Abafarisai na Abasadukai bakomochiera ase ebatiso, akabatebia, "Inwe oroiboro rwe ching'iti, ning'o obakureire ng'a motame korwa ase endamwamu egochi-gocha?"

Ἰδὼν δὲ πολλοὺς τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ Σαδδουκαίων ἐρχομένους ἐπὶ τὸ βάπτισμα αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;

But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
The student expressed surprise when he noticed that the English used the word vipers because in his
experience the word ching'iti [singular: eng'iti ] held the broader meaning of animals. He suggested that the word amang'erere [singular: ring'erere ] would be more accurate.

It is important for teachers of the Gospel to be able to identify differences of word usage in communities were we work in order to be able to teach Scripture clearly and accurately.

This highlights the significance of the issues surrounding translation in pastoral practice. When translating from the Biblical languages into our native languages we might find there is no direct equivalent word. Or, we may find a word in our native language that is really close, only to find that others fluent in our native language do not use the same definitions which we hold.

What I present here is an example some ways to examine issues like this when they arise.

The Use of the Term ἔχιδνα in Context in the Original Language Texts

The first thing we would desire to do is to establish the meaning of the term in the original language, which, in this case, the Koine Greek of the New Testament. The term used in this context is ἐχιδνῶν. We want to find out how this word is used in context. This word is used four other times in the New Testament: Here in Matthew 3:7 and also in Matthew 12:34; 23:33; Luke 3:7; and Acts 28:3.

Matthew 12:34
Inwe oroiboro rwe ching'iti, naki moranyare gokwana amaya, onye more ababe? Naki ebichire as'enkoro, nabio omonwa ogokwana.
Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Matthew 23:33
Inwe ching'iti, abana be rirubi, naki morakore motame ekina kie chaanam?
ὄφεις γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς φύγητε ἀπὸ τῆς κρίσεως τῆς γεέννης;
Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?
Luke 3:7
Nabo akayetebia emeganda yachete erinde ebatiswe nere, Inwe oroiboro rwe ching'iti, ning'o obakureire gotama endamwamu egocha gocha?
Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὄχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ’ αὐτοῦ· Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς;
Then he said to the multitudes that came out to be baptized by him, “Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Acts 28:3
Paulo iga arenge gosangereria chinko, nakobeka igoro as'omorero, eng'iti egasoka as'engecho y'omorero oria, ekamwenarera as'okoboko kwaye.
But when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat, and fastened on his hand.

John the Baptizer's Uses of the Term

The first use of ἔχιδνα/ἐχιδνῶν is of John the Baptizer's preaching against the Pharisees and Sadducees. Luke 3:7 is a parallel record of the same or similar events recorded in Matthew 3:7. Luke records that John also preached these words also to the crowds that came to him. At issue in Matthew is the false teaching of these religious leaders and the false works they promote. In Luke the issue is false repentance and false works of the people who came to John.

John's preaching is drawn from the preaching of Isaiah both in form and in content. Compare what Isaiah wrote to Matthew 3 and Luke 3:
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save; Nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear. 2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood and your fingers with iniquity. Your lips have spoken lies. Your tongue has muttered perversity.
4 No one calls for justice, nor does any plead for truth. They trust in empty words and speak lies. They conceive evil and bring forth iniquity.
5 They hatch vipers’ eggs and weave the spider’s web. He who eats of their eggs dies. And from that which is crushed a viper breaks out. 6 Their webs will not become garments, nor will they cover themselves with their works. Their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.
7 Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood.
Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity. Wasting and destruction are in their paths.
8 The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their ways;
They have made themselves crooked paths. Whoever takes that way shall not know peace.
John's preaching employs the term ἐχιδνῶν highlighting the both the source of the false teaching: the serpent in Eden [Genesis 3]; and to mark that their teaching is poisonous, deadly. One might raise the issue with the English translation of verse 5 at this point since vipers are called vipers because they give birth live [viviparous] and do not lay eggs. But that significance might be missing for many or most English speakers. The meaning is a deadly serpent.

Jesus' Use of the Term

Matthew 12:34
This chapter records Jesus discussion on keeping the Sabbath. In His discussion Jesus makes clear that He is David's heir and Lord of the Sabbath. The Pharisees attempt to keep the Sabbath without acknowledging the Holy One of Israel. This brief exchange is grounded in Isaiah 58, particularly noting verses 7-10. On the basis Scripture concerning David's actions and the Priests' actions on the Sabbath, Jesus makes the case that He is the fulfillment of Jeremiah 33
“For thus says the Lord: ‘David shall never lack a man to sit on the throne of the house of Israel; 18 nor shall the priests, the Levites, lack a man to offer burnt offerings before Me, to kindle grain offerings, and to sacrifice continually.’ ” (v. 17-18)
The second event is Jesus challenging the Pharisees about healing on the Sabbath. The challenge is directed to show the false teaching of the Pharisees who had promoted the idea that keeping the Sabbath excused a person from showing love toward his neighbor. Christ points out that the written Law of Moses even allows showing kindness toward animals on the Sabbath.

Jesus continued to heal. Matthew states that this is Jesus fulfilling His promise made through Isaiah 42:1-4.

A demon possessed man is brought to Jesus and the question is raised "Could this be the Son of David?" This is the initial claim of Matthew's Gospel from the opening verse and the narrative of Jesus incarnation and is the underlying thesis of Matthew's Gospel.  The Pharisees accuse Jesus of being in league with Beelzebub. Jesus responds with His Stronger Man sermon and the Sin against the Holy Spirit drawing on Isaiah 63, particularly verses 7-10.

It is at this point that Jesus speaks about the false teaching of the Pharisees trees bearing bad fruit and as a brood of vipers ἐχιδνῶν. The reference to vipers is contextually consistent with the structure and message of Isaiah 59, particularly verses 4-5.

The point of the comparison is between the deadly nature of the serpent or viper's venom and the deadly nature of the Pharisees'teaching.

Matthew 23:33
This chapter records Jesus' Holy Week sermon against the Pharisees. In this He uses a wealth of imagery and language from Isaiah. Of particular note here is that this particular sermon of Woes parallels the Woes pronounced in Isaiah. To the point of our study the substance of Jesus sermon is the same as that of Isaiah 59. But here there are two references to snakes. The first is with ὄφεις the second with ἐχιδνῶν.
Inwe ching'iti, abana be rirubi, naki morakore motame ekina kie chaanam?
ὄφεις γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς φύγητε ἀπὸ τῆς κρίσεως τῆς γεέννης;
Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?
His use of the term ἐχιδνῶν in verse 33 is contextually the same as the use of viper in Isaiah 59. The term is intended to show the deadly nature of the teaching and works of the the religious leaders/Pharisees.

In Acts

The final example is in the closing chapter of Acts (28:3). The term ἔχιδνα is used to refer to a venomous snake that bit Paul on the island of Malta. The residents of the island are astounded that Paul does not die.

Summary of the New Testament Use of ἔχιδνα

In each of the cases where ἔχιδνα is used in the Koine Greek of the New Testament the animal in question is a serpent. The distinguishing feature of this particular serpent from others is not a specific breed, but that the serpent carries venom which can kill the person whom it bites.

Ekegusii Words Available to Translate ἔχιδνα

A second direction is to look at established and documented usage of words in our native languages.

In 2009 K.M. Bosire and G.K. Machogu produced the first dictionary of the Ekegusii language:  The Authoritative Ekegusii Dictionary: Endabaro Endabasia Y'Ekegusii. [AED] The volume is published in Republic of Kenya and reportedly available in Mombasa and Kisii. Bosire and Machogu sought to capture living Ekegusii in print and to provide a resource for native speakers. [I wish to thank the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library System for lending the AED to me through Interlibrary Loan.]

The English to Ekegusii section of the AED list several Ekegusii glosses for snake (pages 1269-70).  In the following discussion we use this list as well as the definitions of these words in the main dictionary (shown at the end of this presentation). We are looking for a word or words in Ekegusii which, if possible, are used to emphasize two significant semantic components: 1) the animal is a snake, 2) this particular snake bites with deadly venom.

The AED lists some words that are fairly specific about species of snake:
  • ebaweti is the python.
  • ekeuge is a small, bearded venomous snake that makes a cat-like sound.
  • enchoka is a black or green mamba.
  • enyaronyansi is the green mamba.
  • orwerwe is a mamba style venomous snake that attacks without provocation.
  • rinyamoutoki is the puff adder.
  • rirubi refers to a cobra or the Indian spitting-cobra.
The python, ebaweti, is not venomous, even if it may be somewhat dangerous or even deadly to children or the infirm. The other terms here refer to specific kinds of venomous snakes. So these may work as examples but not as a class, but we hope to see if there is a word that is a bit more general containing just the 2 semantic components listed above.

One entry refers to a unique feature that is irrelevant to the use of ἔχιδνα in the New Testament.
  • ekeromerambebakabere refers to a two-headed snake, one head at each end.
Four general terms are listed:
  • eng'endanse a snake, often venomous.
  • eng'iti 1. any animal. 2. snake, often venomous.
  • engendanse a snake, reptile without legs.
  • ring'erere a snake with small head and large tail.
Among these four more general terms the AED lists two terms that refer to snakes generally whether or not they are venomous [engendanse, ring'erere]. And there are two that include a non-essential tendency toward being deadly [eng'endanse, and eng'iti ]. But the last term eng'iti is also used generically of any animal.

Within the AED there are several words for snake which carry the essential component of deadly or venomous of ἔχιδνα but these words are overly specific regarding species. And among the general terms for snake in AED none carry the component or deadly or venomous as essential aspects.

The AED does not describe which terms are in more common use in contrast to which are more obscure. The closest match from the definitions given in AED would be eng'endanse.

Dialect and Native Speaker Intuition

Two of the words at issue in our Seminary discussion were ching'iti, the plural of eng'iti as used in the text of Ebiblia Enchenu, and ring'erere, plural amang'erere as suggested by the Seminarians based on their own experience and intuition as native speakers.

For the Seminarians the word ching'iti did not signify a snake nor did it imply notion of venomous. Their signification for eng'iti fits with the first definition given in AED but not the second.

For the Seminarians the word ring'erere signified not only a snake, but that the word refers to a snake that is typically venomous. This is a difference between the linguistic experience of the Seminarians in their region and those of the translators of Ebiblia Enchenu and the researchers of the AED.

Abagusii history describes the division of the Abagusii people into seven different clans from which one could expect a degree of dialectical variation. (see here) In more recent decades the Abagusii have grown to a population passing 2.5 million. Abagusii population also exhibits increasing distinction between urban centers and the rural areas, even though fairly localized on the eastern side of Lake Victoria. These regions also exhibit distinctions in accent and dialect.

The Translation of ἔχιδνα into Ekegusii in Ebiblia Enchenu

Third, we can become more aware of the translation habits and styles used by the translators of our native language Bibles.

In each of the relevant passages Ebiblia Enchenu translates ἔχιδνα/ἐχιδνῶν with eng'iti/ching'iti except in Matthew 23:33
Inwe ching'iti, abana be rirubi, naki morakore motame ekina kie chaanam?
ὄφειςγεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, πῶς φύγητε ἀπὸ τῆς κρίσεως τῆς γεέννης;
Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?
In this passage ching'iti is used for ὄφεις serpents, and rirubi is used for ἐχιδνῶν vipers. This is interesting, because according to the AED the word rirubi refers to the Indian Spitting Cobra. And while this particular species is obviously not meant in the Greek, the characteristics of the rirubi fit the context well.

enchoka is used in Revelation 12, 13, 16:13 and 20:2 to translate δράκων. In Revelation 20:2b enchoka is also used to translate ὄφις serpent. In these contexts the terms δράκων and ὄφις refer to Satan.

Ebiblia Enchenu uses the term eng'iti/ching'iti with great flexibility. The term is used in Ebiblia Enchenu 62 times.

It appears to be the default translation for serpents. For example ching'iti is used in Romans 3:13 for ἀσπίδων asps; and in 2 Cor 11:3 eng'iti used for ὄφις Serpent where it also refers contextually for Satan.

However eng'iti/ching'iti is also used to refer to animals in general.
naki tibanyarete koremereria ring'ana riria riachigetwe, nonya eng'iti yarenge gokuna egetunwa neakwe amagena, gose yabetwa neritimo;
οὐκ ἔφερον γὰρ τὸ διαστελλόμενον· Κἂν θηρίον θίγῃ τοῦ ὄρους, λιθοβοληθήσεται·
(For they could not endure what was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot with an arrow.” [Hebrews 12:20]
eng'iti/ching'iti is also used to refer to the four living creatures at the throne of God in Revelation, for example:
Nkarora agwo ekero Emanwa y'Eng'ondi egachia koigora ekemo ase biria ebimanyererio, nkaigwa eyemo ase chiria ching'iti chire moyo ekobora, buna eriogi ri'okogukura, Nchuo, orore.
Now I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals; and I heard one of the four living creatures saying with a voice like thunder, “Come and see.” [Revelation 6:1 and throughout]
We can see the flexibility of meaning for eng'iti/ching'iti in Revelation 11:7 where the word is used with reference to the beast from the pit.
Ekero barakore oborori bwabo, eria eng'iti ekorua as'eora nekore esegi nabarabwo, nere nababue nakobaita.
When they finish their testimony, the beast that ascends out of the bottomless pit will make war against them, overcome them, and kill them.
As we saw just above the word was also used to translate θηρίον in Hebrews 11:20. And this may help demonstrate that for the translators of Ebiblia Enchenu the term eng'iti/ching'iti does not carry any necessary implication that the animal signified must be a snake and must be venomous.

Given this breadth of use within Ebiblia Enchenu, a native speaker might be expected to express surprise at the realization that Matthew 3:7 referred particularly to venomous snakes.

Summary

For the Confessional Lutheran Pastors and Evangelists of the Abagusii there may not be opportunity to examine resources every time an issue like this arises. The issues of vocabulary might be minimal at times. At other times they might be very significant. It is important to have an awareness of your own language use and how it might differ from those around you. And be aware that the translators of Ebiblia Enchenu may have had experience with forms in Ekegusii that differ in some ways from the experience of other native speakers in different areas. Similarly, the authors of the Authoritative Ekegusii Dictionary did significant survey research to present a wide representation of Ekegusii usage. But they cannot have been able to get every tradition. And their volume suffers the same problems as any other dictionary: the change of the language through time and the affects of urbanization, cultural change, etc.

As to the substitution or use of the term ring'erere in place of ching'iti in Matthew 3:7, this is where native speakers can use their judgment and provide opportunity to teach their hearers more accurately using the clearest expressions they know.

Notes:

Moterere Omonene "Let Us Praise the Lord" is a Confessional Lutheran hymnal in the language called Ekegusii. It was published in 2008 through the Lutheran Heritage Foundation in coordination with Kiarurwe na Ekanisa y'Ekeinchili Ekelutheri Kenya (Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya). The Lutheran Heritage edition is from 2010. It was typeset and printed by Printwell Industries, Ltd. Nairobi, Kenya.

Moterere Omonene consists of 347 hymns. This volume has Sunday liturgies, orders of service for weddings, funerals, confirmations, baptisms, various dedications, the propers for each Sunday, and Luther’s Small Catechism.  It is a very good beginning for an Ekegusii language Lutheran hymnal. But there are several points at which it could bear improvement. It contains no musical notation for either the Liturgical settings or the hymns. There are frequent typographical errors. In some cases the translation choices in hymns are worth improving.

An additional aim of this project is to help English speaking Lutherans in America to grow in appreciation of the common heritage they share with their Confessional Lutheran brothers and sisters in Kenya of the Abagusii people.

Ekegusii Terms and English Equivalent

The information about the hymns, authors, composers, etc. in Moterere Omonene is sometimes misspelled, incorrectly typeset, or sometimes just in error. As I work through the hymns I will try to make the information uniform in presentation and content. I will be looking for organists to record some settings for the church in Kenya to use in training pastors and congregations. I also hope to work with LHF to put Moterere Omonene on the Hymnary.org website.

The Neo-Babylonian Dynasty from Nabopolassar to Belshazzar

Most of the extrabiblical evidence available before the discoveries of the cuneiform texts in the 1800s was to be found in the following:

In the following survey we will be mainly summarizing the primary sources from the cuneiform texts.

The Assyrian Emperor Ashurbanipal died in 627 BC. In the chaotic year that followed the Babylonian king, Nabopolassar, rebelled and formed an alliance with the Medes, Scythians, Persians, and Cimmerians. In 612 they took Nineveh. Nabopolassar established his seat of government in Babylonia. This began the Neo-Babylonian Dynasty, numbered as the 11th Babylonian Dynasty. The kings were:

     Nabu-apla-usur [Nabopolassar] 626–605 BC
Nabu-kudurri-usur II [Nebuchadnezzar also transcribed Nebuchadrezzar] 605–562 BC
     Amel-Marduk [Evil Mardok] 562–560 BC

     Neriglissar 560–556 BC
     Labaši-Marduk [Labashi-Marduk] 556 BC

     Nabonidus 556–539 BC
and his son and co-regent Belshazzar 5??–539 BC

Families:

Nabupolassar’s heirs are his son Nebuchadnezzar and his grandson Amel-Marduk. Neriglissar is married to Amel-Marduk’s sister and starts a new line. Nabonidus is not related at all.

Nabopolassar established his rule in 626 BC. Near the end of his reign Pharaoh Necho II started invading the near east in 609 BC. King Josiah of Judah allied with the Babylonians, tried to stop Necho’s advance at the Battle of Megiddo. Josiah died there (2 Kings 23:29-37, 2 Chronicles 35:20–24). The Judeans selected Jehoahaz to succeed Josiah, but when Necho came back through he deposed Jehoahaz, took him captive to Egypt, then placed Jehoiakim on the throne (2 Kings 23:31; 2 Chronicles 36:1–4, Josephus Antiquities 10.5). Nabopolassar’s son, Nebuchadnezzar became an astute military leader, leading the Babylonian army and its allies against Pharaoh Necho II to win the Battle of Carchemish in 605 BC (Jeremiah 46:2) while his father stayed at home on the throne. Nabopolassar died shortly after this on the 8th of Abul [approx Aug 15, 605 BC]. His son, Nebuchadnezzar succeeded him.

Nebuchadnezzar II returned to Babylon and began his reign in the 1st of month of Ululu (mid to late September 605 BC). He began a large rebuilding project along with stabilizing and expanding the Babylonian Empire. He reached and captured Jerusalem in 597 BC, deposing king Jehoiachin, taking him hostage with a great number of select people from Judea. He placed Zedekiah on the throne. After 10 years Zedekiah revolted, Nebuchadnezzar lay siege to Jerusalem for 18 months. The city fell in the summer month of Tammuz (approximately July, Jeremiah 52:6), the temple was destroyed, the Judahites who were still alive were deported to Babylon.

The Chronicle Concerning the Early Years of Nebuchadnezzar II lines 10-14 contain Nebuchadnezzar’s report the first siege of Jerusalem and the deportation of the select people, the deposing of Jehoiachin, and the placement of Zedekiah. But Nebuchadnezzar’s records in this inscription stop before the second siege of Jerusalem.

Nebuchadnezzar II ruled Babylon for another 24 years, leaving his throne to his son in 562 BC. (Josephus Antiquities10.6-10; Contra Apionem 1:20-21 where he cites Berosus and Megasthenes)

Amel-Marduk, the son of Nebuchadnezzar reigned for only two years. During these years he pardoned and released King Jehoiachin of Judah (2 Kings 25:27-30; Jeremiah 52:31-34). Amel-Marduk was the last direct male descendant of Nabopolassar to rule. He was killed by Neriglissar, his sister Kasšaya’s husband. (Josephus Antiquities 10.11:1-2, Contra Apionem 1:20-21 where he cites Berosus and Megasthenes)

Neriglissar took the throne in 560 BC, reigning for only four years. His first three years are recorded in his Chronicle. [BM 25124 (98-2-16, 178)] (Josephus Antiquities 10.11:2, Contra Apionem 1:20-21 where he cites Berosus and Megasthenes, Livius website at https://www.livius.org/cg-cm/chronicles/abc6/neriglissar.html )

His son Labashi-Marduk succeeded him, apparently while still a child. Labashi-Marduk was removed, possibly assassinated, after just 9 months. (Josephus Contra Apionem 1:20-21 where he cites Berosus and Megasthenes)

Uruk King List [IM 65066]

Nabonidus took the throne in 556 BC after his son Belshazzar led a coup d'état against Labashi-Marduk. The Mesopotamian records indicate that Nabonidus lead a religious reform unpopular with the priests, trying to return Babylon to worshipping Sin, Šamaš, and Ištar. Nabonidus took interest in restoring old temples and shrines, copying the inscriptions made in their foundation deposits and creating a record of those buildings. He was frequently away from the capitol, leaving his son Belshazzar in charge in his absence.

[Josephus did his best from his lack of sources in Antiquities 10.11:2-7 and Contra Apionem 1:20-21 ]

It is during this time that the events of Daniel 5:1-30 take place.

In 539 BC Cyrus the Great invaded Babylon. Mesopotamian sources are difficult to harmonize, but it appears that Belshazzar was betrayed by his allies and the Babylonian priesthood. Babylon fell without a fight. Cyrus presented himself as the authentic religious heir to the old faith of Babylon, appeasing the priesthood and tradition. (Cyrus Cylinder Fragment A)

Cyrus the Great comes into quite a few Biblical texts. But that is beyond the scope of this summary.

A Lenten Reminder of Cross Bearing

$

There is a useful tradition about giving something up for Lent. While such an act does nothing for our salvation or holiness before God, it does provide us with the opportunity to learn that there are ways we can discipline our own bodies.

But we should be careful not to elevate such self-deprivation to the level of suffering for Christ.
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
[Matthew 16:24-26 NKJV]
A main goal of Lent is to lead us through the Active Obedience of Christ on our behalf to view the Passive Obedience of Christ in our place that our faith may rest on Christ alone, and Christ crucified. His is the cross that saves.

The following is a list, a reminder, both of what suffering for Christ can be, and to keep our brothers and sisters in our prayers.
"For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. " Romans 8:18

This is a partial list that starts in January.

" But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you are blessed. “And do not be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.”  But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;  having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed.  For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil." 1 Peter 3:14-17
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.  Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you." Matthew 5:10-12

Review: Jesus: His Life by the History Channel--Read Your Bible Instead

Read your Bible instead of watching this program. The goal of the History Channel is not to present the Bible accurately. The intent of the of Jesus: His Life is to make money for their network by stirring up controversy and doubt, like many other programs on this network.

Seriously. I'm not joking. Read the Bible instead.

You should be aware that the History Channel is the source for Ancient Aliens, and other sensationalist anti-history.

But let us compare the Bible with an example of the History Channel's use of the Bible in Jesus: His Life episode 1.

The Annunciation starts at minute 7 in the program.

It is very clear at the outset of this episode that the History Channel's producers and writers desire to inject the heresy of Pelagianism into the biblical text.

Pelagius was a late 4th and early 5th century British priest who denied the Scripture's teaching that humans inherited original sin and are by nature enemies of God. In place of this Pelagius taught that every individual was capable of choosing to do God's will and be saved through their own choice. Pelagius' teachings were recognized as unbiblical and condemned as false doctrine by numerous church councils and confessions (including Roman Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed) from the early 5th century to this day. His views are rightly considered heretical. And the heresy of Pelagius has been embraced by a many today who teach that they are Christian.

According to the Bible the angel Gabriel greets Mary:
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.  He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.  And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.” (Luke 1:30-33 NKJV)
According to the History Channel's Jesus: His Life Gabriel says:
"Mary, do not be afraid, for you have found favor with God. If you choose to accept His plan, you will conceive in your womb and give birth, a Son."
First, note the bold italics. These are words the History Channel chose as replacements for the rest of what Gabriel said in the Bible. It is important to notice what they are eliminating: They eliminate the words of Gabriel which declare that Jesus is the Eternal God coming into human flesh according to the promises made to David and Jacob.

They replace this confession of Christ with something that did not happen. Gabriel never appealed to Mary "to accept" God's "plan." And Gabriel never told Mary that Christ would only be conceived "if" she chose "to accept".

Eliminating the words of Scripture about the Divine Human Savior, the History Channel teaches the fiction that Mary's decision to follow God was the focus of this Biblical text.

Mary's response to Gabriel comes next.

According to the Bible, Mary responds:
“How can this be, since I do not know a man?” (Luke 1:34)
        History Channel, Mary:
"How can this happen? I am a virgin."
The History Channel does make clear that at this point Mary was a virgin. So at least at this point in the show the Virgin birth is not denied.

The Gabriel of the Bible, says:
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.  Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” (Luke 1:35-37)
History Channel Gabriel says something completely different:
"Nothing is impossible with the Almighty. The Holy Spirit will visit you. The child you bear will become the greatest of men. He will be called the Son of God."
Eliminated from the Bible is the actual divinity of Christ, and in place of this the History Channel claims that at some time in the future this son of hers will become great and be called the Son of God. The Bible's Gabriel points to Elizabeth and in her the promise of the Forerunner. The History Channel eliminates the fulfillment of the Prophetic Word.  The History Channel Gabriel speaks in a way which is consistent with the heresy of Adoptionism: the false teaching that Jesus wasn't really the Eternal God who became human, but rather that Jesus was a miraculously conceived man who later in life was adopted by God at His baptism and was given the title "Son of God."

        In the Bible, Mary responds:
“Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”
And at this point the Bible says:
And the angel departed from her.
But the History Channel is not done with its version of Mary and Gabriel.

        History Channel has Mary saying
        "Why has He chosen me?"
To which the History Channel's Gabriel says:
"You are pure of heart and soul. Will you accept this gift?"
        History Channel Mary says:
"Here am I, servant of the Lord."
This fictional interchange embraces the heresy of Pelagianism.

This interchange may have been included as a nod toward the Roman Catholic teaching of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. That is, that she was also conceived and born without the contamination of original inherited sin. The doctrine of the Immaculate Conception was officially adopted by the Roman Catholic church by Pope Pius IX in 1854. This view of Mary became widely held through late antiquity. It is not a Biblical teaching, it was accepted as Church doctrine in the Roman Church based on the authority of the Pope.

History Channel Gabriel's fictional question "Will you accept this gift?" implies that she was, at least, if not also other humans, in a position of moral freedom with regard to the Will of God. This is the same kind of moral freedom the Church condemned as Pelagianism from the 5th century and on.

        Summary

Don't bother watching the show. Read the Bible instead.

Some might object to this review as if it were cherry-picking evidence. Shame on you for excusing such false teaching. And may God bring you to repentance and faith.

This review could be many times longer on many more errors and serious heresies and false doctrines promoted in Jesus: His Life. I could have focused on the many baseless and false claims made by the commentators. I could have focused on the whole web of fictional background invented by the writers to frame the episode around their imaginings of what Joseph must have gone through, the fictional conversations between Joseph, Mary, and the people around them. All of which are a load of invented dreck. The invented stories about Jesus have no value at all in teaching us more about who He is or His work for us.

But what matters is how the producers represent the actual Scriptures, the Word of God. (Here understand that Joel Osteen is named, among others.) What do they take out? What do they add?

Here we have seen what they subtract: Christ as the Prophesied Incarnation of the Eternal Divine Son of God as Savior.

Here we have seen with what they replace Christ: The idea of free moral ability to choose to do what God wants, so that God can bless us. That is, the heresy of Pelagianism. And this heresy is often the foundation of both the Prosperity Gospel, the Social Gospel, and false teachers promoting the Word of Faith heresy.

The Use of the Old Testament in the Gospel according to John

Preaching the Gospels well involves understanding the texts of the Old Testament that Christ pointed to in order to demonstrate Who He Is, and what He does. Each Evangelist shows the relationship of Christ to these Old Testament texts in different ways. Here we examine some of the ways in which John documented the continuity of the Old Testament with Christ.

The opening words of John’s Gospel ground the Person of Christ in the opening words of the Old Testament: “In the beginning.” And as Genesis begins with the creation, John states that Jesus Christ is the Eternal One, the Creator. The first day in Genesis is the creation of light and distinguishing the light from the darkness. John describes the Light that was coming into the world, the Onlybegotten Son of God, whom the darkness could not overcome.

John’s Gospel contains many assertions about the relationship of Jesus to the children of Israel and the institutions of that people. At the very beginning of the Gospel is the statement that Jesus belonged to the people of Israel:
1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
This passage is also a reference to several Old Testament passages portraying Israel’s rejection of the coming Messiah. For example:
Isaiah 53:3 And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Psalm 118:22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.
Stressed in this is the fact that the children of Israel are Jesus own people. This is true in the sense that His human nature is biologically descended from Jacob. And it is also true in the sense that this is the people that the Eternal Son of God chose to be His own but who continually rejected Him — as we see in Isaiah:
Isaiah 1:3 The ox knows its owner And the donkey its master’s crib; But Israel does not know, My people do not consider.”
Jesus’ claim that the people of Israel are “His own people” is made in the same way that He did in the Old Testament. In the Gospel of John, this kind of claim by Jesus is not obscure, nor is it isolated.

John chooses his words for the purpose of forcing the reader to recall Old Testament contexts. In the time of Moses the LORD gave instructions regarding the Tabernacle/Tent of the Lord.
1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt [ ἐσκήνωσεν ] among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
This term translated as “dwelt” ἐσκήνωσεν  is a conjugation of the word σκηνόω, which refers to “tenting” or “tabernacling.”  There are hundreds of references to the LORD “tenting” throughout the books of the Law and the rest of the Old Testament.
        [ Hatch & Redpath 1271ff  https://archive.org/details/HatchRedpath2/page/n593  ]

But the significance John emphasizes here is the Tent of Meeting, the Holy Tabernacle where the Glory of the LORD dwelt with His people. Particularly consider the raising of the Tabernacle in Exodus 40:
Exodus 40:33b-38 So Moses finished the work. 34 Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 36 Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, the children of Israel would go onward in all their journeys. 37 But if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not journey till the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the Lord was above the tabernacle by day, and fire was over it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
John did not leave it to the reader to make this connection. The Evangelist stated the continuity directly:
1: 17 For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.
In Moses the lamb is the substitute, both in the case of Isaac (Genesis 22) and the people of Israel during the 10th Plague (Exodus 11-13). the lamb is established as the substitute for the sinner in the sin offering (Exodus 4). The Evangelist records the testimony of the Baptizer to this continuity.
1:29 “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
Throughout this John the Evangelist weaves in another theme of creation in Genesis.
Genesis 1:2 And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
This is introduced in the first chapter with the exposition on the identity of the Baptizer. The theme permeates the Baptism of Jesus and the conversation of Nicodemus with Jesus in chapter 3.
1:32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
This look through the first chapter of John’s Gospel is certainly not comprehensive. It is meant to demonstrate how pervasively John uses themes, events, persons, and words from the Old Testament to demonstrate the continuity of the Person and Work of Christ with the Old Testament. The rest of the survey will be more brief. But before we leave the first chapter let us consider Nathaniel’s calling.

Nathaniel’s namesake is the Prophet Nathaniel through whom God  promised David that David would one day have an heir to the throne who would rule eternally and make peace for the people with God, and that his greater Son would build the true temple (1 Chronicles 17:10-14). The Temple of Solomon would become the first non-migrating dwelling place of the Lord, replacing the Tabernacle. In calling Nathan the Evangelist records Jesus stating that He Himself was the ladder in Jacob’s vision, at the place called Beth-El “The House of God.”
1:51  “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
He claims the Temple itself as His own. In the second chapter Jesus drives out the merchandisers from the the Temple. Jesus’ words describe the temple as His temple.
2:16-17 And He said to those who sold doves, “Take these things away! Do not make My Father’s house a house of merchandise!” 17 Then His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house has eaten Me up.”
John cites Psalm 69:9, a Messianic Psalm. In the immediate context this Psalm also identifies the Messiah’s people and their rejection of the Messiah:
8 I have become a stranger to my brothers,
            and an alien to my mother’s children;
9 Because zeal for Your house has eaten me up,
And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
Not only does Jesus identify the Temple as belonging to Himself and the Father, John records Jesus’ statement that the prophecy of Nathan to David directly applies to Himself.
18 So the Jews answered and said to Him, “What sign do You show to us, since You do these things?”
19 Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
20 Then the Jews said, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?”
21 But He was speaking of the temple of His body. 22 Therefore, when He had risen from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had said.
John documents an event demonstrating that religious authorities at first acknowledged Jesus as being within the authority of the Mosaic Covenant.
3:1-2 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”
Like Moses, Jesus did signs and wonders. Like Moses, Jesus preached. Nicodemus had come to learn more. Perhaps he was carefully holding the promise and following the command of Deuteronomy 18:15-19. The question about the fulfillment of this passage on the coming Prophet was certainly on the lips of those who spoke to John the Baptizer:
1:21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?”
        He said, “I am not.”
        “Are you the Prophet?”
        And he answered, “No.”
The testimony of John the Baptizer shows two streams of continuity from the Old Testament to Christ. First: John the Baptizer describes himself with the words of the Old Testament Prophets as the Forerunner of the Christ. John the Baptizer declares that he is himself the fulfillment of these particular written promises.  Thus, the one to whom John the Baptizer pointed, saying, “Behold the Lamb of God”, this is the One of whom the prophets spoke as the Anointed One..

We have already mentioned the theme of Creation the Spirit and the Water which is taken up in Chapter 3. This theme is emphasized especially in John’s record of Jesus’ words:
3:5-6 “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
After this statement Jesus gives two references to the Old Testament, the first to Numbers 21:4-9 and the Bronze Serpent. John records Christ’s statement that He is the fulfillment of this particular historical act of prophecy.
3:14-15  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
In the very next verse, one of the most widely known of all Bible passages John records Jesus’ reference to Himself in the context of the Sacrifice of Isaac.
Genesis 22:2 “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”
As we mentioned above, the lamb is substituted for Isaac:
Genesis 22:13 So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering in place of his son.
The Evangelist has already given us the Baptizer’s statement that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. He is the sacrifice. Christ’s words to Nicodemus frame His Self sacrifice in terms of what God showed Abraham with his only and beloved son born of God’s promise.
3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
The Evangelist does not limit his exposition of Old Testament continuity only to the Jews, the children of Israel. John ensures that the Old Testament promise to the Gentiles is not forgotten. An example: John’s Gospel documents Jesus’ interaction with a Samaritan woman where Jesus highlights the continuity  between Himself and the Old Testament.
4:21-24 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
This particular example show both Jesus self identifying with the Jews, the people of Israel. And it shows the historical contrast between the inhabitants of Samaria with the descendants of the kingdom of Judah.

        Statements about Himself

This brings us into considering several statements of Christ recorded in John’s Gospel where Jesus identifies Himself as the fulfillment of the Word spoken through the prophets. His own recorded claims are that His Person and Work are the same as what is recorded in the Old Testament.

The quotation from John just above continues with the woman’s confession of faith and Christ’s declaration:
4:25-26 The woman said to Him, “I know that Messiah is coming” (who is called Christ). “When He comes, He will tell us all things.”
Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He.”
The very setting of this encounter with a woman at a well recalls the Abraham’s arrangement to find a bride for his son through his servant meeting Rebekah (Genesis 24), Jacob meeting Rachel (Genesis 29), as well as Moses and Zipporah (Exodus 2:16-22).

John records for us a number of direct statements of Jesus and discourses where He identifies Himself as the source, content, focus, and goal of the Old Testament Scriptures.
5:36-39 But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
John records several times Jesus made this specific type of claim. In the context of chapter 5 Jesus went on to point out that the lack of faith exhibited by the Pharisees was due specifically to their lack of faith in the Old Testament, particularly, Moses:
5:46-47 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. 47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?”
John records examples of Jesus performing signs and then preaching about those signs as His own fulfilment of the promises of the Old Testament. From chapter 6 and following John records Jesus’ assertion that He is the one who provided Manna in the wilderness first through the miraculous feeding of 5000; afterward by direct statement that He is the one who is sent from the Father as the Bread of Life.

We will touch briefly on a couple more examples.

In John 10 Jesus directly claims to be the Shepherd of Israel, the fulfillment of Ezekiel 34, Psalm 23, Isaiah 40:10-11. And at the same time He claims to be the substitutionary sacrifice for His people in fulfillment of Exodus 11-13, Leviticus 4, Psalm 16, 22, Isaiah 53 and elsewhere.

The language of Christ which John records is of continuity between Jesus and Moses: continuity and fulfillment.

We discussed Christ’s title as Son of David discussed above with respect to Nathan and the Tabernacle in John 1. We should highlight also Jesus using an action to demonstrate His statement. John, along with the other Evangelists, highlights Jesus entrance into Jerusalem (ch. 12). Again, this action is a claim of continuity with the Old Testament. Particularly of the Davidic Covenant. It is an action that requires knowledge of the Scriptures teaching the Davidic Covenant, the succession and coronation of Solomon, as well as the continuance of the Davidic Covenant after Solomon’s death.

And as chapter 12 precedes, the Evangelist returns to quotations from Isaiah to describe their fulfillment in the outward rejection of Jesus by His own people.
12:37-41 But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” 39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: 40 “He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.” 41 These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
Every chapter of John’s Gospel impresses this connection and continuity between Christ and the Old Testament books. Christ is the fulfillment of the Promise, He is the fulfillment of the Law. He is the Creator, He is the Redeemer. He is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the Sheep. He is the Heir to the Throne of Israel rejected by His own People for their sake. He is the High Priest who offers Himself as the sacrificial Lamb. And even as the He passed over the firstborn of Israel in Egypt, He Himself is the lamb that is offered and whose blood is upon us that God’s wrath not be upon us.
19:36-37 For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, “Not one of His bones shall be broken.” 37 And again another Scripture says, “They shall look on Him whom they pierced.”
        Summary

John’s Gospel documents the actions and words of Christ constantly highlighting how Jesus forces those around him to recall these references to Himself in Old Testament motifs, persons, events, and promises. John spelled out his purpose in choosing to document these particular events and words of Christ and their connection to the Old Testament. He wrote:
20:30-31 And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

How Do We Publicly Challenge False Prophets Like David Owuor?

        April 11, 2019

During our Tuesday class this week a particular question was raised about how we as pastors should address or confront false teachers and teaching, such as is carried out by David Owuor. In addition to the discussion we had in class I would like to offer this from Dr. Martin Luther’s Lectures on Galatians in 1535 (Luther’s Works American Edition, Volume 26: pages 17-18).

In his comments on verse 1, chapter 1 of Paul’s Letter to the Galatians Luther discusses Paul’s defense of his own call. Luther stated:

“God calls us in two ways, either by means or without means. Today He calls all of us into the ministry of the Word by a mediated call, that is, one that comes through means, namely, through man. But the apostles were called immediately by Christ Himself, as the prophets in the Old Testament had been called by God Himself. Afterwards the apostles called their disciples, as Paul called Timothy, Titus, etc. These men called bishops, as in Titus 1:5ff.; and the bishops called their successors down to our own time, and so on to the end of the world. This is a mediated calling, since it is done by man. Nonetheless, it is divine.
“Thus when someone is called by a prince or a magistrate or me, he has his calling through man. Since the time of the apostles this has been the usual method of calling in the world. It should not be changed; it should be exalted, on account of the sectarians, who despise it and lay claim to another calling, by which they say that the Spirit drives them to teach. But they are liars and impostors, for they are being driven by a spirit who is not good but evil. It is not lawful for me to forsake my assigned station as a preacher, to go to another city where I have no call, and preach there. (As a doctor of divinity, of course, I could preach throughout the papacy, provided that they let me.) I have no right to do this even if I hear that false doctrine is being taught and that souls are being seduced and condemned which I could rescue from error and condemnation by my sound doctrine. But I should commit the matter to God, who in His own time will find the opportunity to call ministers lawfully and to give the Word. For He is the Lord of the harvest who will send laborers into His harvest; our task is to pray (Matt. 9:38).
“Therefore we should not intrude into someone else’s harvest, as the devil does through his sectarians. With ardent zeal they claim to be saddened that men are being so miserably led astray, and to want to teach them the truth and rescue them from the devil’s clutches. Therefore even when a man seeks, with pious zeal and good intentions, to rescue with his sound doctrine those who have been led astray into error, this is still a bad example, which gives ungodly teachers an excuse to intrude themselves, after which Satan himself occupies the see. This example does a great deal of damage.
“But when the prince or some other magistrate calls me, then with firm confidence, I can boast against the devil and the enemies of the Gospel that I have been called by the command of God through the voice of a man; for the command of God comes through the mouth of the prince, and this is a genuine call. Therefore we, too, have been called by divine authority — not by Christ immediately, as the apostles were, but ‘through man.’”

Thus far Luther. What Luther stated is consistent with the Augsburg Confession of 1530:
        Article XIV: Of Ecclesiastical Order.
Of Ecclesiastical Order they teach that no one should publicly teach in the Church or administer the Sacraments unless he be regularly called.

The official public mechanisms have adapted to different regions and different times. Nonetheless, one should be confident in one’s own call by the external mediated call of Christ through His congregation. And, one should abide within the authority of that call.
